How PRP Injections Work

Overview

Regenerative medicine is a cell-based approach to healing that restores or creates normal function in the body. It is sometimes also called biologic therapies or orthobiologics.

Platelet Rich Plasma injections (PRP injections) are a non-surgical regenerative medicine procedure that can promote quick, effective, and sustained relief from discomfort and pain. We offer PRP injections at our clinic in Jacksonville, FL for people with hip pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain. How It Works

By increasing the level of platelets and growth factors at the site of injury or pain, medical research shows there is a potential to improve how the cells communicate and gather, and ultimately heal.

PRP injections use a concentration of platelets and growth factors found in a small amount of your blood or bone marrow. After taking the sample, it goes into a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets.

At OrthoEdge, we use the cutting edge Arthrex Angel® System. The Angel® System is the only fully automated system that can deliver platelet concentrations up to 18x baseline with the ability to adjust the concentration of white blood cells (leukocytes).

When blood or bone marrow are in this concentrated state, it is referred to as platelet rich plasma (PRP).

Research has shown that PRP injections can be effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis,* as well as ligament or tendon injuries, and sports injuries.**

How PRP Injections Help the Body’s Natural Healing Process

When an injury occurs or a degenerative condition worsens, the body goes through several stages of healing to try to repair the bones, ligaments, and tissues involved. By increasing platelets and growth factors in a specific area of the body that requires regeneration or healing, we can promote faster tissue repair and regeneration at every stage.

Stage 1

Everything Involved Gets Inflamed from the Body’s Natural Inflammatory Response

This is immediate.

Stage 2

The Cells Divide & New Tissue is Formed to Replace Damaged Tissue

The platelets are the first to arrive at the injury site to begin the healing process. Naturally, this can take a few weeks.

Stage 3

The New Tissue Matures & Strengthens

Naturally, this can take several months.

What are the risks associated with PRP injections?

Because PRP injections use your own natural properties to treat your injury, side effects are extremely uncommon. Similar to any procedure, there could be a potential for bleeding, tissue damage, infection, nerve injuries, and poor efficacy. This further supports why you should consider getting PRP injections from an orthopedic surgeon, like Dr. Michael Adams, which can help reduce the risks and improve the efficacy.

Does health insurance cover PRP injections?

While the PRP injections and the Arthrex Angel® System have been approved by the FDA, the FDA has not approved the procedure for most uses, which is why it can be considered experimental by some insurance companies. The FDA clearance allows for doctors to prescribe and administer the PRP injections if the doctor believes it is in the best interest of the patient, you just might have to pay out of pocket.

If your doctor determines you are a candidate for PRP injections, our office will contact your insurance company to determine if they will cover the procedure. If your insurance company will not cover the procedure, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan that works for you. In most cases, our out-of-pocket PRP injection costs are often lower than those of many primary care physicians and orthopedic clinics.

How do I find out if I am a candidate for PRP injections?

Ask Dr. Micheal Adams if PRP can help you! After an initial examination and going over your concerns, plus any tests you’ve had done, Dr. Adams will let you know if you are a good candidate for PRP injections.

How long should I plan to be at the clinic when I am getting PRP injections?

The entire PRP process takes less than 1 hour. Most patients are able to return to normal activity levels shortly after the procedure.

PRP injection therapy can safely and effectively improve functional activity in patients with OA and produce positive analgesic effects in patients with KOA, TMJOA, and AOA. However, PRP injection therapy did not significantly reduce pain symptoms in patients with HOA. In addition, the analgesic effect of LP-PRP was greater than that of LR-PRP.
